Pole Life Lesson #4: Ditch The Labels

Labels are a common part of our everyday lives… We label people on their gender, sexuality, hair colour, careers, nationality, race, hobbies, music taste and more. Labels help us to compartmentalise the world around us, and we use them to understand ourselves and our place in the world. Labels aren’t inherently bad, but the problem is when we start assigning labels to ourselves or others that aren’t exactly positive, or that we attach a negative judgement to.

POLE JOURNEY: #POINTYOURF***INGTOES

We’ve heard many of our pole teachers shout this during class even when you think your toes are pointed…it’s not enough! When it comes to exercise, most people overlook two of the most important parts of their body - their feet. They train upper body, lower body, and core without even thinking to strengthen their feet.

Having recently competed in Pole Theatre, a key part of my training was to improve the pointe in my feet as well as strengthen my ankles to avoid sickling (explained later) mainly because I did not want any pictures or the video to come back showing flexed feet or half a pointed toe! (Some would call this vein but I call it being a perfectionist!).

As a child my parents ferried me to dance classes for roughly a year. I did ballet, jazz and contemporary, and even did a couple of dance exams. That is where any dance experience ends… because I hated dancing! Yep, dancing and me did not get along at all.

Athleisure is EVERYWHERE at the moment…the glut of New Year’s resolutions to get fit will see more people than normal wearing workout gear but this time it’s not going to last for just a month…..no no, this new trend looks like it’s here to stay and for more than just a season too!

Whether it’s on the school run, in line for coffee, over a business lunch; fitnesswear as everydaywear is becoming de rigueur, even if you haven’t worked out! But it’s not the high end fashion designers pushing this trend forward, it’s the health conscious consumers and savvy retailers looking to appeal to the masses.
