Pole Life Lesson #4: Ditch The Labels

Labels are a common part of our everyday lives… We label people on their gender, sexuality, hair colour, careers, nationality, race, hobbies, music taste and more. Labels help us to compartmentalise the world around us, and we use them to understand ourselves and our place in the world. Labels aren’t inherently bad, but the problem is when we start assigning labels to ourselves or others that aren’t exactly positive, or that we attach a negative judgement to.

POLE JOURNEY: #POINTYOURF***INGTOES

POLE JOURNEY: #POINTYOURF***INGTOES

We’ve heard many of our pole teachers shout this during class even when you think your toes are pointed…it’s not enough! When it comes to exercise, most people overlook two of the most important parts of their body - their feet. They train upper body, lower body, and core without even thinking to strengthen their feet.

Having recently competed in Pole Theatre, a key part of my training was to improve the pointe in my feet as well as strengthen my ankles to avoid sickling (explained later) mainly because I did not want any pictures or the video to come back showing flexed feet or half a pointed toe! (Some would call this vein but I call it being a perfectionist!).

Pole Life Lesson #3: Focus on YOUR Strengths

As a child my parents ferried me to dance classes for roughly a year. I did ballet, jazz and contemporary, and even did a couple of dance exams. That is where any dance experience ends… because I hated dancing! Yep, dancing and me did not get along at all.

POLE JOURNEY: Polewear meets Athleisure fashion for SS17

POLE JOURNEY: Polewear meets Athleisure fashion for SS17

Athleisure is EVERYWHERE at the moment…the glut of New Year’s resolutions to get fit will see more people than normal wearing workout gear but this time it’s not going to last for just a month…..no no, this new trend looks like it’s here to stay and for more than just a season too!

Whether it’s on the school run, in line for coffee, over a business lunch; fitnesswear as everydaywear is becoming de rigueur, even if you haven’t worked out! But it’s not the high end fashion designers pushing this trend forward, it’s the health conscious consumers and savvy retailers looking to appeal to the masses.

Pole Life Lesson #2: You’re On Your Own Journey

When I first started pole dancing I progressed at pretty much the same rate as everyone else, lots of moves I picked up quickly, and other moves took me a little longer, nothing unusual there. Once I proceeded onto intermediate and advanced tricks I started to make exciting progress, and with good strength gains I learned how to handspring, superman, shoulder mount and so on within my first year. However, I then decided to focus on my dancing, choreography and pole flow. For 2017 my tricks have pretty much taken a back seat. Those same class mates who were level with me a year ago are now banging out an Iron-X and polishing pole combos that I am only just starting to learn. Am I jealous? Am I worried? No, not really. I may not have that crazy combo or those strength moves, but I won Dance Filthy Amateur and I’ve got kick ass floor work skills!

POLE JOURNEY: TOP LOOKS FOR A POLE DANCER’S NEW YEARS EVE….WHATEVER YOUR PLANS

POLE JOURNEY: TOP LOOKS FOR A POLE DANCER’S NEW YEARS EVE….WHATEVER YOUR PLANS

With Christmas nearly upon us and presents nearly wrapped – my shopaholic head moves to what I should wear over the Christmas break and more specifically what to wear to bring in the New Year!

I don’t know about you but I find New Year’s Eve a little over-rated as the years go by. You feel like you should do something, but with all the prep of Christmas taking over, planning for New Year’s gets forgotten and you end up either spending a fortune in a club, at home with mates drinking or watching the celebrations on the TV!

But whatever the plans, I always like to dress up somehow…whether it’s in my New Year’s loungewear, smart casual for seeing friends or full on party gear!

Also as pole dancers…..we are far from the ‘norm’ in any circumstances where social gatherings are concerned! The outfit criteria usually includes “can I split in it?”, “will it fit my shoulders burst out of it hulk-style?” and “if there is something that resembles a pole…can I pole in it?” so understandably, outfit choices are sometimes difficult to choose.

So not matter your plans, here are some top looks for every kind of Pole Dancer’s New Year’s evening.

POLE JOURNEY: OFF THE POLE CONDITIONING - EXCLUSIVE Q&A WITH SARAH SCOTT

POLE JOURNEY: OFF THE POLE CONDITIONING - EXCLUSIVE Q&A WITH SARAH SCOTT

As pole dancers we love our workouts, we’re all in agreement pole is fun and highly addictive! We love what it does to our body’s, we love the excitement it brings when nailing new moves, we love feeling strong, flexi and badass but what happens when you can’t get to a studio? Or you’re away and haven’t got a pole near you? Panic sets in about loosing your strength for pole, forgetting the moves, not having the energy and you make a desperate attempt to find something that resembles a pole to feel like you’ve had a workout!

I caught up with the lovely Sarah Scott to talk about her new online training programme designed specifically for pole dancers….off the pole!

POLE WITH PEACH: POLE LIFE LESSONS - FACING YOUR FEARS

POLE WITH PEACH: POLE LIFE LESSONS - FACING YOUR FEARS

When X-POLE asked if I would be interested in writing as a guest blogger for their site, I wracked my brains to think what would make an interesting series of blog posts… This is how I came to be writing about ‘Pole Life Lessons’, a series of blog posts exploring the ways that pole dancing has enriched our lives, in the pole studio and beyond! POLE JOURNEY: WARM UP WEAR FOR WINTER

POLE JOURNEY: WARM UP WEAR FOR WINTER

As the nights are drawing in, thoughts move to cold winters and wrapping up warm. Personally I love winter…but not for pole training! Cold poles, cold floor, longer warm ups….when all I want to do is just dance! So instead of freezing our peachy bums off, I take this time of year as the perfect excuse to shop for winter warm up wear!

When it comes to what to wear, I really like to think about it, firstly because I am a firm believer of what you wear reflects your personality but also because if you feel good in what you’re wearing, you will feel more confident in yourself which in turn will make you have a better training session (and exactly why shopping is good for the soul!).

Here’s a round up of my favourite warm up pieces for training, and don’t forget at the end of this coming month is Black Friday….perfect excuse to stock up before the nights get even colder!

Rising stars, Pro’s and Elites of the European Pole scene wow the judges in Zagreb

This weekend past, Croatian capital Zagreb played host to the European Pole Art Show Championship, as a sponsor of this magical and visually astounding event, X-POLE were in attendance, here's our run down of how it played out.

After arriving slightly bleary eyed at 2:00am local time, snatching a power nap for an hour or two, we were on site working with the European Pole Art Show Championship event organiser, Ingrid Jerak of Studio I fame. A warm welcome and a quick confab later, we set to work.
